Dan: Hi there Mike

Mike: Hi

Dan: We're gonna talk for the next two minutes about crime fiction. Can you tell us a bit about how you got interested in crime fiction?

Mike: Well I think I've always liked reading er and I can't remember which novel it was but I think I picked up a crime novel I think it might have been erm I started off with a traditional Agatha Christie thing which I read a lot of when I was a kid and then I went on to read some crime fiction when I did my first degree and really just got interested in that genre of fiction and have been ever since really so in fact outside of the sort of stuff I read for my job crime fiction is pretty much everything that I read really.

Dan: So are you quite good at predicting how the story's going to unfold?

Mike: Er

Dan: Do you get an intuition as to.possible plots?

Mike: Oh..the butler usually does it but er yeah sometimes I think it's interesting on the level of story yeah but it's also I like it on the level of character and there are interesting characters and to see what happens to them and also the the there's a sense as well I quite like the atmosphere of the idea of piecing together who's done it solving the problem. Which I suppose the more you read the better you get but the best stories are not particularly predictable I think

Dan: How do you think crime fiction relates to the screen? Have there been many examples where a good crime fiction has made a good film. Can you think of any off the top of your head?

Mike: Er. Off the top of my head I think well there are one or two it's always difficult to put things onto film but I think there are things like james Ellroy's book LA confidential was a reasonable film and I mean bizarrely enough some of the tv detective spin-offs

Dan: Midsummer murders

Mike: Yeah not so much midsummer murders for me but more things like inspector morse and a touch of frost I think those translate very well across from the book to the page.
